What Should You Name Your Amazon Brand?

Choosing a name for your Amazon brand is one of the most important decisions for your business. Your brand name sets you apart from the competition and represents your brand reputation and message. You want to choose a name that your customers will be excited to promote.

Think of the pride people have when wearing Nike’s or drinking from a Hydro Flask. You want to choose a name that your customers will not only be excited to own a product from, but a brand that they will promote with pride. A great brand name will lead you to free marketing from your dream customers. We have detailed four tips to help you choose a name for your Amazon brand.

1. Stand Out From The Crowd

Your brand name can either differentiate you from your competitors, or make you look exactly like them. Closely imitating other successful brands in your niche can lead to legal issues and is strongly discouraged. Choosing a unique name will not only save you from large legal fees but it will also help your customers see you as different and perhaps superior to the competition in your brand niche.

Consider the following five elements of successful brand names.

  1. Engages the Imagination: Think of Apple, the brand name is unrelated to the product/service they provide but it sparks the customers imagination to the possibilities with the product/service.
  2. Fits the Brand Image: A brand name that is related to your product. The brand TruFruit does a great job of this. Even with no knowledge of the brand, the customer knows that the brand is all-natural and includes fruit. Choosing a name that fits your brand image helps your customer to understand your brand without even seeing it.
  3. Short, Easy-to-Remember, and Easy-to-Spell: Customers are more likely to remember a short name. Thus, shoe brands like Nike or Hoka are more well known than Alden Shoe Company. Keep the name short and concise and your customers will remember you.
  4. Pleasing to Hear and Say: Including rhyming, alliteration, or just a fun word to say in your brand name will help people remember your brand. Think of Jamba Juice, Lululemon, or Costa Vida. When a brand name is fun to say, it will spread faster!
  5. Appropriate Globally: Ensure that your brand name is appropriate in all languages. This way you can globalize your product.

2. Leave Room For Growth

You want to choose a name for your Amazon brand that allows your business space to grow in your niche. You must be careful not to limit your brand by creating a name that is too specific to your business in the starting stages.

When deciding on a brand name, avoid the following:

  1. Current Fads and Trends: While it may be tempting to choose a current fad or trending word or name in your brand name, it will become outdated fast. If you’re hoping for your business to stand the test of time, choose a timeless brand name.
  2. Product in the Brand Name: Imagine that you decide to sell yoga products and call your brand “Yeti Yoga.” This works for you until you start selling products for running as well. Your customers will begin to get confused about who you are as a brand and what products you sell. Make sure that the name you choose leaves room for your business to grow into something bigger than it is initially.
  3. Location Specific: Including a location in your brand name may work for a local business, “Utah Heating and Air” for instance, but with an Amazon brand you need to appeal to the global marketplace. Choose a name that your customer will universally recognize and understand.

3. Keep Your Name Cohesive Across Platforms

The main goal of the brand name is for your customers to understand and easily recognize your brand. In order to reach this goal, your brand name must be cohesive across all platforms.

Here are three tips to help your brand name stay consistent across platforms:

  1. Test the Name In An Online Search: Before getting set on any specific brand name, make sure to do a quick google search of that name. The name may already be taken by another brand or it could be associated with something that you do not want to pop up when people search for your brand.
  2. Make Sure the Domain is Available: Even if you do not plan on setting up a website initially for your Amazon brand, it is important to do a quick search to see if your name is available. We recommend reserving your domain quickly. It’s just a $20 monthly cost. You can see if your domain is available by doing a quick search here!
  3. Make Sure the Social Media Handle is Available: As with the domain, check to see if your social media handles are available. If they are, reserve them immediately. It is free and easy-to-do!

4. Get Creative And Don’t Settle

Choosing a name can get tedious but don’t settle for less. Don’t just pick the first name that doesn’t sound terrible. Here’s a good process to follow when choosing a brand name:

  1. Brainstorm. Start writing down every idea that comes to mind. Let inspiration strike you wherever you are. To get the juices flowing, try a random business name generator like this one!
  2. Make a long list. Longer than you would like. Your list of possible names should include every idea from the good to the bad to the terrible. Even an awful, cheesy name may pave the wave for a brilliant idea, so add it to the list. Mix and match words. Come up with every combination possible. The more possibilities you have, the more creative avenues you will have to discover something great.
  3. Whittle it down. Once you have an absurdly long list of ideas, start to choose your favorite ones. The ones that stick out to you. The ones that adhere to the principles discussed above. Come up with a list of 5-10 that you could live with.
  4. Get outside opinions. Start asking your friends and family which names they like. You can even put out a public pole to get more broad responses from strangers. Ask them what each name inspires in them, makes them think of, or makes them feel. It’s important to get these outside opinions because sometimes your connotations can make you biased for or against certain names.
  5. Do some research. As stated above, you don’t want your name to overlap with existing brands so do some thorough searches to see what’s out there. See if there are good website domains and social media handles that would support the considered names.
  6. Choose a name you’re proud of. Based on your research and the responses from your outside sources, it’s time to choose your name! Fully commit to the name you choose. Build your logo, reputation, and message into it. And your brand is born!
